Training Grades and Topics
JGS Associates Limited has developed three Grades of training to encourage the professional development of engineering personnel.
These Grades of training are aimed at initially meeting the needs of the apprentice technician and encouraging other engineering personnel in their developing career towards senior engineer status and engineering manager positions, thus assisting the Engineering Manager to develop a training path for each of his engineering staff.
Grade One
Gary Sowerby is a Fellow of the Energy Institute
and an Approved Training Provider
Topic 1 – comprises 2 sessions (1 day)
- Why we need steam and theory on how it is generated
- Condensate recovery
- Steam distribution from the boiler house
- General sizing and layout, selection and application of steam traps
Topic 2 – comprises 2 sessions (1 day)
- Implementing Carbon Management
- Highlighting good steam routines and initiatives to reduce Carbon Emissions on process steam plant.
- Various examples of reducing steam losses in order to minimise Energy.
Topic 11 – comprises 2 sessions (1 day)
Safety and risk awareness covering the operation of process steam distribution and its associated control equipment
Grade Two
Topic 3 – comprises 2 sessions (1 day)
- Why we need to reduce steam
- Reducing valves
- Selection and correct installation, applications and layouts
- Basic knowledge of steam temperature controls
- Selection and correct installation, applications and layouts
Topic 4A – comprises 2 sessions (1 day)
General steam boiler operational procedures and safety awareness
(N.B. This topic can also be offered at Grade Three comprising 4 sessions over 2 days: Topic 4B)
Topic 5 – comprises 1 session (½ day)
Design exercise of a clean steam distribution system, covering selection of steam controls and condensate return equipment for a process plant
Topic 6 – comprises 1 session (½ day)
Design exercise covering various recommended steam reducing valve arrangements
Grade Three
Topic 4B – comprises 4 sessions (2 days)
General steam boiler operational procedures and safety awareness
Topic 7 – comprises 2 sessions (1 day)
Design exercise for a heat exchanger installation covering selection and installation of steam control and condensate return equipment
Topic 8 – comprises 2 sessions (1 day) or 3 sessions (1½ days)
Various steam installations and their recommended fitted arrangements
Topic 9 – comprises 2 sessions (1 day)
Design of a steam distribution layout with associated equipment
